Calaguas Circa 2016
Calaguas Circa 2016

They say all roads lead to Rome, but in my life, every boat ride seems to lead back to Calaguas.

Over the last 10 years, I have experienced this island in every conceivable way—from being a broke backpacker with zero survival instincts to literally running a resort. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: It doesn’t matter how you get to Calaguas. The moment your feet touch that powdery white sand, the island claims your heart, and you will keep coming back.

Here is the factual, slightly sarcastic, and deeply true story of my three eras of Calaguas travel.

Era 1: The "Broke Adventurer" (The Local Organizer Experience)

The Vibe: High energy, low budget, questionable kayak decisions.

Fifteen years ago, I was young, filled with a reckless sense of adventure, and surviving on a call center agent's salary. A friend whispered about this untouched paradise with sand finer than Boracay, minus the crowds, and—most importantly—way cheaper. Back then, Waling-Waling was the hip "place to be," but our wallets respectfully disagreed. Comfort was highly subjective; we were ready to rough it.

We traveled to Paracale, where our local contact, "Phoks," was waiting. There was no official port terminal for us. Instead, we literally walked through a resident's backyard to board a tiny fishing boat that held exactly eight people. An hour and a half later, we landed on the LGU side of Mahabang Buhangin.

It was a brilliant 5-Day/4-Night trip. Phoks cooked for us, showed us around, and introduced us to the locals, who were incredibly warm and accommodating. We felt like houseguests of the entire community. We even kayaked all the way to Balagbag—an epic journey that we later found out was completely not allowed. Whoops. But sitting on that beach, surrounded by kind locals and pristine waters, I fell completely in love.

Era 2: The "Moana Survival Mission" (The DIY Family Experience)

The Vibe: Character building, existential dread, and a literal rainbow.

A few years later, my risk tolerance was about to be severely tested. Since we "knew" the island, we decided to DIY the trip. We called up Phoks to negotiate a boat, but this time, we brought our own food... and our kids.

We made the brilliant decision to travel during the "ber" months (off-peak). When we got to Paracale, it was sunny, but dark clouds were looming. No gale warnings, no rain falling, so off we went! It was the same tiny 8-passenger boat: 2 adults, 4 kids, the captain, and his helper.

Halfway through the trip, the ocean decided to humble us. We hit 5-to-6-foot waves. I spent 30 agonizing minutes convincing my kid to sing the Moana soundtrack just to distract her, while I silently questioned every single life decision that led me to this wooden plank in the middle of the Pacific. I realized right then and there: I am too old for this level of extreme adventure. But then, true to Calaguas magic... the skies suddenly cleared like nothing had happened. We were gently cuddled onto the shores of Mahabang Buhangin, and a literal rainbow was waiting to welcome us. Perfection.

Era 3: Destination Relaxation: The "Bougie" Edition (The Direct Booking Experience)

The Vibe: Blue umbrellas, corporate hubris, and a pandemic plot twist.

Fast forward five years. I had transitioned to working from home as a Digital Nomad. My background was in Customer Tech Support and online marketing. One day, my mom demanded I offer my services to my aunt, who was struggling to get bookings for her beach resort.

She had me at "beach resort." I always dreamed of living and working at one! So, I scheduled a catch-up session with my aunt to discuss operations, marketing, and sales. That’s when the plot twist hit: The resort was in Calaguas. My heart skipped a beat. She told me their tagline: Destination Relaxation. I knew I had to go back.

Armed with corporate confidence, I thought, "I used to manage a call center of 250 people. How different can a beach resort be?" (Spoiler alert: I found out the hard way.)

This time, I traveled to the island aboard MB Corazon. We had our own 50-passenger boat! It had its own CR! It had a 4-man crew in matching uniforms! It felt incredibly bougie. As we approached the shore, the resort staff were already standing there, holding on-brand blue umbrellas, smiling. It was surreal.

I stepped into my role alongside Tita Cora. She trained me, shared stories, and threw me into the trenches. I did housekeeping, groundskeeping, bookkeeping, and even cooked when we had a handful of guests. My daughter and I lived there for months. I was so blissfully off the grid that I didn't even know the global pandemic had started until we were forced to evacuate.

The Ultimate Takeaway

When the travel bans lifted, we went right back. Having seen the island from the perspective of a broke backpacker, a terrified parent on a DIY trip, and the manager of the Calaguas White Sand Resort, here is the absolute truth:

  • The Rate is High, but the Value is Higher: Yes, direct resort booking costs more than pitching a tent. But the peace of mind, the safety of a massive boat, the managed buffets, and those blue umbrellas? They aren't just for shade, the moment you step under one, the hustle ends and your relaxation begins. It’s a quiet promise that from this moment on, you are completely taken care of. Worth. Every. Peso.

  • It’s a Passion Project: I learned that CWSR isn't just about filling beds to meet a bottom line. It’s a family business kept alive out of pure love for the island and a commitment to helping the local community.

  • The Magic is Universal: Whether you arrive on a tiny fishing boat singing Moana for survival, or step off a 50-pax private vessel into the shade of a blue umbrella, Calaguas will take your breath away.

If you want an adventure, pitch the tent. But if you’re finally ready for true "Destination Relaxation," let us hold the umbrella for you. We’ll be waiting on the sand!
